The two teams from opposite ends of the MVABL met up on
Sunday for a double header at Northwestern High School in
Springfield. The Redlegs and Indians managed to get both
games in despite rain clouds looming for most of the day.
Each team took home a win on the day, as the Indians took
game 1 while the Redlegs took game 2.
In game 1 the Indians sent ace Matt Spradlin (3-6) to the
hill to counter Kevin Schaeffer (2-0) of the Redlegs. The
Redlegs struck first in the top of the first inning, plating
4 runs fueled by Brian Kuhbander's 2nd home run of the
season which drove in three. The Redlegs held the 4-0 lead
all the way until the top of the 5th when the Indians got a
run back, pulling within three. Knowing his pitcher was
tiring, Coach Robinson decided to send Schaeffer out for one
more. The Indians took advantage of this decision, scoring
5 runs in the frame to take a 6-4 lead. The Redlegs would
not recover as the Indians piled three more on in the top of
7, as Reston Wilson blasted a 3-run homer of his own to push
the Indians advantage to 9-4. The Redlegs did fight back in
the bottom of 7 as Jared Bradley walked followed by a Brad
Clark double. John Long then grounded out to drive in a
run. Guntle walked, and Kuhbander drove one in with a
single. But that was all the offense the Redlegs could
muster as Spradlin ended the threat with a strikeout to
preserve the win for the Indians at a final score of 9-7.
