Redlegs Win on Opening Day

04/11/2011

On a blustery Sunday opening day afternoon, the Redlegs and Shockers squared off in a rematch of a 1st round matchup in the 2010 playoffs. Kevin Campbell started on the hill for the Redlegs and pitched well despite giving up 6 runs (5 earned) over 3 innings. Campbell struck out 4 through his 3 innings of work. The Shockers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after two innings highlighted by a solo home run from Casey Middleton. But the Redlegs battled back in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring 3 times aided by a combined 4 walks and hit batters in the inning. The Shockers were quick to regain the lead however, scoring 3 more times in the 3rd capped off by a 2 run shot off the bat of Thomas Fluty. The Redlegs got another run in the 3rd on a solo shot from Justin McCurdy, and scored 5 times in the 4th. Robinson hit a one out homerun, and after a few walks McCurdy brought in 2 more with a double.

Brad Clark took over on the mound in the 4th inning and was able to silence the Shockers bats for the remainder of the game. Through 6 innings, Brad allowed 3 hits and struck out 5 batters on the way to his first win of the 2011 campaign. Brad also added an insurance run in the 5th inning, doubling in Matt Mattice who had previously stolen his 2nd base of the game. Brandon Howard finished the Redlegs scoring in the 8th inning with a towering homerun to left field, producing the final score of 11-6. The Redlegs will head out to Jamestown next week at Greenview High School to take on the Tigers and Cardinals in a split double header. The first game will be against the Tigers and will be a 1:00 start.
