Redlegs Still Looking For Offense

06/13/2011

The Redlegs continued their losing streak against the A’s managing only 2 runs while giving up 13 in another lopsided defeat.

Brad Clark got the start and pitched well for 6+ innings. He took a no-hitter into the fourth before giving up a two out blooper into left field off the bat of Jared Whited that plated two runs and gave the A’s a 2-0 lead. The Redlegs got one of the runs back in the top of the 5th. With one out, Jared Bradley drew a walk and moved up to 3rd on a double by Jake Robinson. Steve Benthal then hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop who threw home hoping to nab Bradley but the throw was not in time cutting the Redlegs deficit to 1 run.

The A’s increased their lead back to two in the 5th when a foul out caught by catcher Benthal left the plate unattended and Cody Liming alertly tagged and scored. The Redlegs again played small ball in the 6th when John Long singled, advanced to 2nd on a passed ball, to third on a fly out by Brandon Howard, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Campbell.

The A’s would reclaim their 2 run lead again in the 6th when Joey Watson singled in John Webb to make the score 4-2. That’s where the wheels fell off for the Redlegs. In the 7th, Jeff Myers led off the inning with a fly ball to right that was misplayed and led to a double. Clark struck out AJ Jiles but was chased after an error and two singles in favor of Kevin Cambell. Cambell allowed a run on a sac fly by Kyle Combs and three more on a 2-run single by Whited and an RBI single by Chris Estepp. The A’s tacked on 3 more in the 8th when with a full count and two outs the runners were moving on a bases loaded bloop single into right field to bring the final score to 13-2.

The Redlegs have scored a total of 10 runs in their last 5 games. To put this in perspective, they put up 10 runs in one inning earlier this year against the Indians. They hope to get the bats on track again against the Tigers in a double header at Preble Shawnee Sunday at 1:00.
