Redlegs Drop 6th Straight

06/29/2011

The Redlegs went into Tuesday night’s game against the Beavercreek Sox losing a franchise worst 5 straight games. The Sox meanwhile were riding a 5 game winning streak, coming off of a big win over the Miami Valley Fusion on Sunday. During the Redlegs 5 game slide the main concern has been the offense, as the club only produced 10 runs over the span. That all was about to change however as it was the defense that ultimately killed the home team on this night.

The Sox sent Colby Clark to the mound, younger brother of Brad Clark, and the Redlegs jumped out early scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Brandon Howard and John Long. But the Sox took the lead right back in the top of the 2nd. After getting an unearned run in the 1st, the Sox pushed 3 across in the top of the 2nd to take a 4-3 lead. But the Redlegs answered immediately in the bottom half of the 2nd, scoring 3 more times to take a 6-4 lead. Jacob Robinson got things started with a 2 out single, followed by a walk to Taylor Guntle. Brad Clark then drove in a run off of his younger brother and Brandon Howard doubled for the 2nd time in as many at bats to bring Guntle and Clark in. But the Redleg bats fell silent for the next 4 innings, as Colby Clark got a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, and relief man Matt Mayes pitched a scoreless 4th and 5th. The Redlegs threatened in the 4th, loading the bases on a single from Robinson and walks to Taylor Guntle and Brandon Howard. But Mayes was able to get a fly out and strikeout to end the inning.

Meanwhile the Sox took a lead that they would never relinquish in the top of the fourth scoring 4 times, 3 off of a blast from Brandon Ward, to take a 8-6 lead. The Sox then played add on in the 5th scoring 2 unearned runs in the 5th and 1 unearned run in the 6th as they continued to put pressure on the Redleg defense. In the bottom of the 7th trailing by 5 things looked bleak for the Camden Club. Showing a little fight, John Long walked to start the inning followed by an Eric Williams single. After the runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd, Matt Redman got his 3rd RBI of the season on a fielder’s choice groundout and Jared Bradley singled one in directly after. But that was all the Redlegs offense could muster and eventually lost by a final tally of 11-8.

Highlights: Jacob Robinson 2-4, 2R. Brad Clark 2-4, RBI. Brandon Howard 2-3, 2 2B, 3RBI, BB. John Long 1-3, 2B, 2RBI.
