Slammers Walk Off to Top Redlegs in Extras

07/27/2011

The Redlegs got a rematch against the Slammers who put up a combined 39 runs over two games against them just a couple of weeks ago. This weeknight affair would turn out to be a much different story however, as the pitchers would take control of this game from start to finish.

Kevin Campbell took the hill against Slammers ace Jared Wagoner and battled each other through the first 4 innings. The Slammers struck first, getting 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st with RBI singles from Deane Grandfield and Justin Dunlap. The Redlegs cut the lead in half in the 2nd when Brandon Howard led off with a double and eventually came around to score when Caleb Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Redlegs would then take the lead in the 4th when Howard again led off but this time with his 5th home run of the season to tie the game at 2. Caleb Rodriguez and Steve Benthal then added back-to-back singles before Kyle Slone knocked Rodriguez in with a single to give the Redlegs a 3-2 lead. But the Slammers came right back and tied it up in the bottom of the 4th when Ben Butler doubled in a run to make it a 3-3 ballgame. The Slammers then loaded the bases with nobody out and the Redlegs turned to Brad Clark to try and get them out of the jam. Clark came in dealing and punched out the first two batters he faced. Slammers skipper Rick Anderson then lined a ball to left field but Jared Bradley tracked it down to end the inning saving multiple runs from scoring.

Scheduled to be a 7 inning game, this one would need 8 to be decided. The Redlegs came up in the top of the 8th and were able to load the bases with 1 out. But Wagoner buckled down and got a strikeout and groundout to end the threat. This brought Justin Dunlap to the plate to lead off the bottom of the 8th and he wasted no time ending this one. Dunlap sent a shot over the left field fence to give the Slammers a walk-off victory. The Redlegs will look to rebound when they take on the Ohio Mariners this Thursday night at 7:00pm at Action Sports Complex in Dayton.
